is there someone on this forum who can assist me with my MB Sprinter 212. It is 8 years old and when I select a lower gear there is a sound and vibration around 1000-1500rpm that sounds like a groaning noise. Is this common with the manual gearbox or is it something else?

Hello robdunford,
in this forum we have experience with a vibration of the driveshaft, but this appears at higher turns (usually between 2000 and 3500 rpm)and sounds not at all groaning.
But I will try to translate your problem, so maybe one of the not english speaking members can help.
By the way, where do you come from?

robdunford hat einen 8 Jahre alten 212. Wenn er runterschaltet, hat er bei 1000-1500 Umdrehungen so ein Geräusch und eine Vibration, klingt irgendwie ächzend. Jetzt fragt er sich, ob das bei der Handschaltung normal ist, oder ob er sich Sorgen machen muss.

Hi Rob,
I´ve got a 212 with manual ger box as well.
When does the sound appear?
Selecting a lower gear usually means to let the car slow down by the motor, and that means the rpms go higher than they´ve been before.
Doin this I sometimes recognize a kind of singing noise which might come from the syncron rings and I think this is normally.
Do you have this car new or is just the noise new?

Thanks for all your inputs, let me explain further. The sound which is a low frequency growling sound comes when I start from stationary in 1st gear then to 2nd etc. I first noticed it when I was coming out of a side street and thought it sounded like a front wheel drive shaft problem, but the Sprinter has rear drive. This van is new to me but has had a full MB service history. I did remind me of gears chattering perhaps. I have heard that the central propshaft bearing can go bad and make noises. There is also a high frequency whine when I am at around 80kmh in 5th gear. Maybe the two are related.

Hi Rob,
the high frequency whine is what I already mentioned above.
This can appear without the propshaft bearing going bad and also with a complete service history. We have had this on several vehicles, independant from year, body version and engine. Sometimes it helps to fill the propshaft with urethane-foam, sometimes it helps to screw adittional mass to the gearbox where ist lying on the silentblock, sometimes nothing helps. :Hae:

Wenn Rob anfährt und hochschaltet, dann rattert so ähnlich wie ein Fronttriebler mit kaputten Antriebswellen.

To answer your original question, I am from England. I am a video editor by profession, I use Apple computers to edit the video. I work with a friend on a project called RedHotFootage at www.redhotfootage.com. I bought the van recently as a motorhome made by La Strada.
